Tips for Searching the Gazetteer

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Forest Hill

former town in central Cabarrus County. Inc. 1887 but now a part of the city of Concord. Began as a mill settlement in the 1850s and named McDonalds Mill. Later known as Odell Mill and Locke Mills; now the site of Randolph Mill.
Forestville

community in NE Wake County S of the town of Wake Forest. Inc. 1879; charter repealed 1915.
Forge

community in E Surry County served by post office, 1888-1903.
Forge Knob

on the Swain County, N.C.-Blount County, Tenn., line in Great Smoky Mountains National Park between Rich Gap and Buck Gap.
Forge Mountain

NW Henderson County between South Fork Mills River and Boylston Creek in Pisgah National Forest. Alt. 3,280. Granted to Philip Sitton about 1806 as a "forge bounty" where he manufactured iron for many years. Adjoining it was the Gillespie gun works, where long guns were fashioned from Sitton's iron.
Fork

town in SE Davie County. Inc. 1895 as Fork Church, but long inactive in municipal affairs. Developed around Fork Baptist Church, organized 1793. Alt. 824.
Fork Branch

rises in NE Onslow County and flows NE into White Oak River.
