At the bus station

A black man stands at a bus station beneath a sign reading "Colored Waiting Room." The Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 established that segregation in public spaces, such as bus stops, for black and white people was allowed. This court decision would not be changed until 68 years later with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which declared segregation in public spaces illegal.
